About Us
What TVMF is
The Texas Veterinary Medical Foundation is the public relations resource and the animal welfare champion of the veterinary profession in Texas.
What TVMF does
The Texas Veterinary Medical Foundation accomplishes this purpose through three divisions of work:
Public Awareness
Through various public relations efforts and public outreach activities, we strive to promote animal welfare and educate the public about the importance of responsible pet ownership.
Fundraising
We seek and receive contributions from veterinarians, the pet-owning public, philanthropic organizations and animal-related industries.
Program Support
The funds raised are used to support a wide range of programs including animal welfare services, educational activities, veterinary student support, animal-related research and various activities that encourage animal wellness and humane treatment.
TVMF Supported Programs and Activities—Current and Future
The Texas Veterinary Medical Foundation currently supports the following causes:
Good Samaritan Program
The Texas Veterinary Medical Foundation has created a program aimed at recognizing exceptional and caring individuals who have voluntarily and unselfishly given their time and expertise to others, while promoting compassion, responsibility and animal welfare. Three award categories: the Good Samaritan, the Community Service, and the Visionary award have been established. The winners of these awards will be able to choose an animal related, non-profit organization to receive a $5,000 donation, in their honor, from TVMF. To learn more about this program and to nominate someone, please click here.
Texas Animal Hall of Fame
Founded by the Texas Veterinary Medical Foundation in 1984, the Texas Animal Hall of Fame was created to share the joy of the human-animal bond by recognizing exceptional animals. The goals of the Texas Animal Hall of Fame are: To honor the outstanding contributions our animal companions make to human lives; To heighten public awareness of the human-animal bond; To allow Texas Veterinary Medical Association (TVMA) members to share in celebrating their patients’ accomplishments by serving as nominators.
Disaster Relief
In response to the animal and agricultural issues presented by natural disasters, the Texas Veterinary Medical Foundation founded the Texas State Animal Resource Team (TXSART) in 2006. TXSART works with the state and local communities to coordinate resources, assist in the development of animal plans, and educate emergency managers and the public about the importance of disaster animal issues and personal preparedness. Addressing and preparing for animal issues before a crisis can protect both human and animal life.
Public Education
The Texas Veterinary Medical Foundation aims to educate the public about veterinary medicine, teach animal owner responsibility and promote regular examinations and preventive medicine. TVMF has also underwritten the cost of developing a veterinary history museum to be housed in the new TVMA headquarters building in Austin. The Mark Francis Museum of Veterinary History will provide a very attractive interpretive exhibit telling the story of veterinary medicine in Texas. We will make it available to the general public and invite area schools to include the museum in their field trip schedules.
Veterinary Student Support
The Texas Veterinary Medical Foundation works to ensure the infusion of bright new medical talent into the profession by providing student scholarships and emergency grants to veterinary students at Texas A&M University (TAMU). Our student support activities have included scholarship support for students enrolled at the TAMU College of Veterinary Medicine, emergency grants to help students overcome education-threatening adversities, medical dictionaries to all freshman students, support for speakers at student events and support for student summer research programs. The public benefits from a dependable source of talented medical service.
Post-Graduate Veterinary Education
The Texas Veterinary Medical Foundation strives to develop the habit of continuing professional education among young veterinarians and encourage high-quality programming for continuing veterinary education through the Texas Veterinary Medical Foundation. Our support in these areas has included direct funding for education to TVMA and scholarship support for recent graduates attending the annual Southwest Veterinary Symposium.
Special Projects
When the need arises, the Texas Veterinary Medical Foundation supports other special projects that benefit animal health and well-being.
